The Provincial Directorate of Health of Holguín is the first to create an investigation commission that will attend to the complaints of the relatives of those who died from covid-19 in the province. The agency announced it in a short post of Facebook in which he warned of the arrival in Mayarí and Sagua de Tánamo of Dr. Nancy Tamayo Rodríguez, head of the Office of Attention to the Health Population in the territory.
“Professionalism and transparency characterize the highly qualified team in search of every detail that allows a coherent and positive response to the people,” concludes the brief statement.
In the absence of more specific details, the commission will attend to the “search for answers” of those who lost family members in Holguín during the worst moments of the covid-19 pandemic. The publication provoked fifty comments, including a majority that wondered about the usefulness of a commission at this point.
“Will they be able to revive those dead to give them an explanation?”
“Will they be able to revive those dead to give them an explanation?” loved ones and I mainly know what it is: the negligence that exists in the hospitals, the bad organization and all that can be added to the lack of oxygen and the lies that the leaders put “, are some of the reactions that can be read to the message.
The entity, however, has responded to several comments arguing that although it is not possible to recover the lost lives, those who have claimed deserve an explanation.
A few weeks ago, Dr. Francisco Durán, national director of Epidemiology of the Ministry of Public Health, suggested during an appearance to update the situation of covid-19 that when the situation had improved, an adequate analysis and balance of what happened could be started. , including the determination of the number of deceased.
In most Western countries, investigation commissions have been opened on what happened around the pandemic in hospitals or residences, whether they acted well or not – reaching the courts in many cases – and trying to approximate the death figures to the reality through data adjustments or accounting for excess mortality. Although the scope and depth that this Holguín commission may have is not known, it is the first of its kind to be opened in Cuba.
Although in recent weeks the official numbers of infections have decreased significantly, Holguín continues to maintain community transmission
Holguín became not only one of the epicenters of the pandemic in August, but also one of the protests by doctors against the prime minister, Manuel Marrero, who suggested that many of the health professionals did not adequately comply with the protocols.
Marrero’s words were pronounced in Cienfuegos, but it was in Holguín where the rebellion of the doctors broke out with more force, who began to broadcast videos in which they reproached the prime minister for his frivolity despite the effort they were making in the red zone, exposing themselves to contagions, doing numerous overtime hours – and without being paid – and without adequate means of protection.
Although in recent weeks the official numbers of infections have decreased significantly, Holguín continues keeping community spread. According to the provincial newspaper, Now, the province accumulates 88 deaths in the first 27 days of October, “for which the fatality continues to be high in this territory of more than one million inhabitants.”
