The Senate knows a project of law that would seek to elevate to the category of province to the municipality of Las Matas de Farfánwhich currently belongs to San Juan. If successful, it would be number 32 in the country and would be called Saint Luciapatron saint of municipality.
The regulations, which are in a premature stage, were introduced last Thursday by the senator of San Juan, Felix Bautista. It was sent to the commission of Municipal Development and Non-Governmental Organizations in order to render a report and then approve or refute the proposal.
The history It relates that the Matas de Farfán was created in 1780 in honor of Bartolomé Farfán, the Spaniard who explored those lands. It was a key area in the battles before and after the Independence.
The legislator from Fuerza del Pueblo (FP) stated that the data from the Census of Population and Housing of 2022, which shows that the demarcation has a population of 48,173 inhabitants and covering 633 square kilometers, where rice, corn, beans, sorghum and peanuts are harvested. San Juan would lose ground
The province Saint Lucia would be made up of Las Matas de Farfán as municipality headland, which would have Carrera de Yeguas and Matayaya as municipal districts.
The municipalities of El Cercano and Vallejuelo with their respective municipal districts of Batista and Derrumbadero, as well as Jorgillo and Chapulín, would also be part of it. At present, both belong to San Juan, along with Juan de Herrera and Bohechío. The proposal indicates that as boundaries, this new province would have the municipality of Elías Piña to the north and west, Bahoruco to the south and the municipal district of Pedro Corto to the east.
The commission of Municipal Development and Non-Governmental Organizations must submit a reportwhich, if favorable, must be approved in two consecutive readings and then complete a similar cycle in the Chamber of Deputies. Afterwards, the promulgation of the Executive Branch would be necessary.
