A 34-year-old woman dies of leprosy in a hospital in Santa Cruz and epidemiological surveillance is activated

On Wednesday, October 26, a 34-year-old woman was hospitalized in an emergency in the Pampa de la Isla hospital in the capital of Santa Cruz, as a result of a rare disease that he suffered from and that until that day had not been confirmed what it was.

The patient arrived at the hospital accompanied by her husband. After consulting the man and reporting that he could not find space in a tertiary hospital, the doctors observed that the woman had several ulcers on her bodyarms with long cuts as if he had fallen from a motorcycle, added to the fact that the face was deformed.

Faced with this situation, the doctors immediately prepared the emergency room just for the patient. and activated the biosafety protocolsince everything pointed to the woman being infected with leprosy.

Fernando Becerra, director of the Pampa de la Isla hospital, informed EL DEBER that they quickly called the National Center for Tropical Diseases (Cenetrop) to perform a biopsy study to determine if the patient suffered from leprosy. After hours, the test showed that the woman was positive for said disease.

The doctor indicated that by protocol they carried out other studies towards the woman that they also indicated who had an underlying disease, diabetes, which mainly did not allow him to heal his wounds. As a result of the progress of both ailments, the patient died at around 2:10 p.m. on Friday, October 28.

He added that it is suspected the husband is also infected because it presented similar characteristics to leprosy and that it is expected that it will arrive at the hospital to be subjected to a study by Cenetrop.

For her part, Dr. Carla Chávez, in charge of Epidemiology at the Pampa de la Isla hospital, told EL DEBER that epidemiological surveillance was activated at the couple’s home, which is located in the municipality of La Belgica, to confirm or rule out whether the two children that the victim has in common with her husband are infected.
