CDMX, Mexico. – Rosa Amelia Sotolongo, 22, was murdered this Sunday by her partner and the father of her youngest son in the house where they both lived, in the town of Aguada de Pasajeros, Cienfuegos. The young woman was killed on the morning of this April 2 with a machete, they confirmed to CubaNet people close to the victim.
“He had assaulted her before, he had even attempted suicide due to his mental illness, but he was not crazy as they say now. He knew what he was doing to her and he killed her out of jealousy, ”he explained to this medium. a friend from Sotolongo.
The source, who requested the protection of his identity, also confirmed that the victim’s two children were inside the house when the events occurred.
“The Police arrived because the neighbors immediately called for help, but they did not enter the house immediately. I cannot understand how two armed men were afraid of one who did not have a gun”, said the interviewee.
In social networks, several users have added that the two officers who came contacted the provincial station (more than 60 kilometers away) to request reinforcements. Supposedly, once they came, after the crime, the attacker was arrested. However, the two sources with which CubaNet contacted to confirm the femicide are unaware of this version.
Rosa Amelia Sotolongo is survived by a six-year-old girl and a two-year-old boy. So far this year, 14 women have been murdered by their partners or ex-partners on the Island.
So far, in 13 of the 15 provinces of the country at least one femicide during 2023. Let there be news, Rosa Amelia Sotolongo is the second woman murdered in Cienfuegos this year and number 20 in the entire country.
This is barely an underreporting: we do not know how many women have died from gender-related issues. The Government does not make the statistics transparent nor does it tell the stories of the victims.
