Alexandros Lampis, a 21-year-old Greek soccer player, died last Wednesday after suffering a heart attack during the match that his team Ilioupoli FC played against Ermionida, from the Greek soccer third division.
The player, who would have turned 22 on February 25, collapsed only five minutes into the game. Despite the quick reaction of the players and the coaching staff of both teams, they could not do anything to save his life. The stadium did not have the presence of an ambulance, which took about 20 minutes to reach the scene, according to local media.
Ilioupoli FC regretted what happened and expressed its condolences to the family of the deceased. “The club and the whole city mourn the loss of a boy who was part of the heart of the club and the local community,” read a statement from the Greek team. “The club expresses its deepest condolences to Alexandros’ family and will be actively at his side whenever and wherever necessary,” the message continues.
