At the beginning of last month, the Cuban Women’s Network registered another crime against a woman living in San Antonio de los Baños, in the province of Artemisa. The victim was 30 years old and was murdered “by a 16 or 17-year-old boy, on October 2, around 8:30 at night,” activist Zelandia Pérez, a member of the Network, told Radio Televisión Martí, who denounced that despite the increase in femicides on the island, “the Government does not take this into account and we continue to wait for a law that protects women against violence.”
The three feminist collectives made a call at the beginning of last February to seek answers to the increase in feminicides on the island and to demand effective state action in the face of these murders and are part of the independent voices that denounce these events working with a network of activists for the whole country.
These associations consider that the State must recognize that there is a problem to act in these cases, they requested that the figures of victims of sexist violence be provided and the crime of femicide be classified in the future reform of the Penal Code, scheduled for 2022.
