Santo Domingo.- Several inmates were injured during a riot at the Anamuya Correction and Rehabilitation Center, in La Altagracia province.
According to inmate reports, the riot was in protest at the alleged mistreatment of inmates who are confined in that penitentiary center by the Penitentiary Surveillance and Treatment Agents (VPT).
“They mistreat us”, “they hit us”, “they take us out late and lock us up early”, one of the prisoners told journalists who showed up at the scene.
He denounced that prisoners are mistreated by prison security agents. The inmates took two police officers hostage, according to reports.
They demanded that military and police agents be taken to the prison to carry out these tasks.
It is recalled that less than a month ago, the inmates denounced that they were forced to sell drugs in the prison or otherwise received beatings.
The fiscal Higüey’s head, Mercedes Santana, said that they have opened investigations into the inmates’ complaints.
