The medical director of the Social Welfare Institute (IPS), Dr. Óscar Franco, said at a press conference that the pension opened a summary of three doctors in the framework of the wrongful amputation complaint to a patient. The fact would be a “mistake of communication”, and not negligence, he indicated,
The intervening doctors chose to change the surgical plan during the surgery taking into account that the left limb was more affected by irrigation problems, Franco said.
“Both legs were affected. The doctors decide that the left limb is the one with signs of greater vascular compromise, colder, with infection. Usually, the innervation of the limbs is the first thing that is suffered when there is a vascularization problem”, Franco stressed.
In addition, the IPS medical director ruled out an act of medical negligence and emphasized that it was a “communication error” with the families.
For this reason, the IPS has reportedly initiated an administrative summary and delivered all the corresponding documentation to the Prosecutor’s Office, so that the Public Ministry can carry out the investigations.
Relatives denounced that at the Social Security Institute (IPS) they mistakenly amputated the left leg of their patient, a 78-year-old man. They initially denounced an act of medical negligence.
