Indian farmers return home after a year of protests

Two days ago, the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) coalition of agrarian organizations suspended the demonstrations after the government accepted the demands made by the peasants.

The SKM received a revised draft proposal from the Executive and then obtained the formal communication signed with the cabinet letterhead, the News Click portal said.

The Indian government agreed to the request to form a committee on the minimum price of support for farmers and the withdrawal of court cases against farm workers in the states of Haryana and Uttar Pradesh.

The Haryana authorities agreed to compensate and grant a state job to the families of farmers killed during the demonstrations, as well as to withdraw the cases brought against the farmers during the agrarian struggle.

In turn, the Uttar Pradesh authorities also dropped the charges against them, the publication added.

The agricultural unions decided to start evicting the five sites of their protests on the outskirts of New Delhi at the end of a year of fighting that began in November 2020.

Three weeks ago, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced in a televised speech that his administration would repeal all three agricultural laws in the winter session of Parliament.

Shortly after, the two houses of the Legislature gave their approval to the elimination of the aforementioned norms.

The leaders of the agrarian unions said they would meet again on January 15 to verify compliance with their demands.
