Hundreds of people protest in front of the White House for the ruling on abortion in the US.

Hundreds of people marched this Saturday through the streets of Washington to gather in front of the White House to protest against the decision of the US Supreme Court to eliminate the legal protection of abortion, in force for 50 years.

The march, called by Women’s March, will be replicated throughout the day in different American cities, such as New York, Los Angeles and Chicago, hand in hand with the organization Rise Up 4 Abortion Rights (Rebel for the right to abortion).

Some protesters explained to Efe that this is the largest protest they have seen in the city since the draft of the Supreme Court ruling was leaked to the press in early May.

“I think it would have been even bigger if it hadn’t been for the rain,” said Diana, who believes that people “are ready to do something, and they are also ready for civil disobedience.”

The woman also warned that the protests “will become even bigger if nobody does anything.”

Diana, who is already combing gray hair, explained to Efe that she believes that the younger generations, who are the ones who will mostly have to face the consequences of the Supreme Court’s decision, are doing “a great job” collecting the defense witness of reproductive rights.

The woman added that she has “no fear about the future” of access to abortion in the country, due to the passion of the young protesters protesting around her.

Joining Diana was Cherry, who had traveled from Ohio to protest in Washington after learning that a woman in her state had been denied an abortion she needed to receive chemotherapy.

Cherry also referred to the 10-year-old girl who apparently had to travel from Ohio, where on the day of the Supreme Court ruling a total ban on abortion from six weeks of gestation automatically came into force, to the state of Indiana, where medical termination of pregnancy is allowed up to week 22.
