South Korean authorities approved the model health certificate prepared by the Ministry of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries (MGAP), allowing exports of beef in block and in cuts (“trimming”).
Minister Fernando Mattos explained that joint efforts with the Uruguayan Foreign Ministry made it possible to finalize this agreement between the two countries, in response to long-standing requests from the industrial sector. Leading to Uruguay being the only client that accesses that market with the condition of being free of foot-and-mouth disease with vaccination. In addition, the Government continues efforts to reduce the payment of tariffs.
“It is an important step in the diversification of the markets, which also allows generating a higher value of the merchandise,” he explained.
He recalled that Uruguay is still the only nation in the world that agrees to sell Japan with the condition of being free of foot-and-mouth disease with vaccination, and now Korea is joining. “Uruguay managed to generate trust in a highly demanding market,” she said.
He also recognized that our country pays a 38.5% tariff to enter there, an aspect that he considered a commercial disadvantage. In that sense, he advanced that there are possibilities to reduce this value to improve the conditions of competitiveness and the preference for Uruguayan meat.
The South Korean beef market has characteristics that make it especially attractive, due to its high volume, growth rate and import prices.
