Cuban President thanks the support of the UNDP to the Island

The Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel On Friday, he thanked the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) for the support provided to Cuba in numerous fields, according to official media reports.

Through his Twitter account, the president expressed “gratitude for all the support that Cuba has received from the UNDP”, something that he personally communicated to the regional director for Latin America and the Caribbean of that UNDP entity. UNLuis Felipe López-Calva, receiving him at the Palace of the Revolution.

During the meeting, Díaz-Canel assured López-Calva that the Island will comply with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 2030 despite the negative impact of the United States embargo and highlighted several issues in which the UNDP’s participation has been relevant to the Caribbean country, according to an office from the agency Latin Press (PL).

The president pointed out that “UNDP has been very cooperative in how to provide support and address situations that allow us to move forward.” In that sense, he emphasized “the understanding that the UNDP has had on the effects of the blockade on Cuba,” and made reference to the report addressed each year to the Secretary General of the United Nations, as part of the proposed Resolution against that economic blockade imposed through Washington to the Island.

Díaz-Canel especially thanked “all the support that the UNDP gave us in the most complex moment in Cuba with the pandemic” of COVID-19, the report underlines.

López-Calva, with extensive experience as an academic at prestigious universities around the world and in key management roles at multilateral organizations such as the UNDP and the World Bank, assured, for his part, that Cuba has always been a “great friend” of the organization. he represents, according to a video of the meeting posted on Twitter by the Cuban Presidency.

Remember PL that during his stay in the largest of the Antilles, which began on July 4, the also Undersecretary General of the United Nations held talks with ministers, deputy ministers and visited various Cuban facilities and communities.

One of these visits took place in the western province of Artemisa, where the UN director verified the impact of the four programs that the UNDP executes there to contribute to the local developmentand that have generated 784 jobs, of which 386 are female, according to a note of the Cuban News Agency (ACN).

According to the newspaper, in Artemisa territory, the UNDP supports projects related to the conservation of threatened mountain ecosystems, coastal resilience in the face of climate changeto support the strengthening of fruit chains at the local level and the development of an Articulated Platform for Comprehensive Territorial Development.
