MIAMI, United States. — Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe died Friday after being shot twice while giving a speech at the entrance of a train station in the city of Nara.
In accordance with Press media of the Asian nation, the death of the 67-year-old politician was confirmed by doctor Hidetada Fukushima, professor of emergency medicine at Nara Medical University Hospital.
Abe, who served as prime minister between 2012 and 2020, was shot in the neck and once in the heart. According to reports, the injuries caused uncontrollable bleeding that led to his death, despite the efforts of medical personnel to save him.
“He was bleeding profusely and we couldn’t save his life,” lamented Dr. Hidetada Fukushima, who confirmed the politician’s death.
At the time of his death, the former Japanese ruler led a rally to mobilize the vote in favor of his Liberal Democratic Party (PLD) with a view to the Senate elections next Sunday, in which that political force aspires to revalidate its large majority.
Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, Abe’s disciple in politics, publicly mourned the former ruler’s death.
“I am deeply saddened, I am at a loss for words. We have lost a great leader who loved the country, had a vision of the future and made great strides in various fields for the benefit of this nation,” the prime minister said in statements collected by different media outlets.
The main suspect in the death of Shinzo Abe was identified by the Japanese police as Tetsuya Yamagami, 41, who, according to the Japanese news agency Kyodo, was a former member of the Japanese Self-Defense Forces (Army).
the television network NHK published that Yamagami shot the former prime minister in the back twice using a homemade weapon.
