MIAMI, United States. – Several Cuban and international civil society organizations, headed by the Cubalex Legal Information Center and the Justice 11J working group, presented the report on Thursday “A year without justice: Patterns of state violence against 11J protesters”.
In general, the report describes and analyzes the repressive patterns developed by the Cuban State as part of its response to the 11J protests. It was carried out based on the systematization of information on arrests and administrative and criminal proceedings initiated against the protesters.
During the presentation, the director of Cubalex, Laritza Diversent, assured that the protests of July 11 and 12, 2021 they marked a milestone in the history of Cuba and have generated a disproportionate increase in repression on the island.
For her part, the activist Salomé García Bacallao, of Justice 11J, recalled that until today there have been 1,484 arrests linked to the historic protests and said that 701 people remain in prison.
After reviewing the repressive milestones of 11J, García Bacallao referred to the conclusions of the report, which asks the international community to denounce the repression in Cuba, demand the release of political prisoners and access for victims to international justice, as well as the imposition of sanctions against those responsible for human rights violations, among others.
John Pappier, senior investigator of Human Rights Watch, stated that the report prepared by Cubalex and Justicia 11J traced “an excellent x-ray of the repression on the Island”, which is in “one of its worst moments with respect to human rights.
The report “A year without justice: Patterns of state violence against 11J protesters” was presented in the framework of the first anniversary of the 11J. Also participating in the session were Gerardo Berthin, Vice President of International Programs at Freedom House; Alessandra Pinna, Director of Programs for Latin America and the Caribbean, also from Freedom House; Erika Guevara Rosas, director for the Americas at Amnesty International; and Giselle Morfi Cruz, Cubalex lawyer.
