The investigation and legal proceedings carried out in Haiti on the assassination, exactly one year ago, of the country’s then president, Jovenel Moise“they seem to have stagnated”, denounced this Thursday (07.07.2022) the United Nations (UN).

Through a statement, the UN mission in Haiti considered it “urgent” that the necessary means be made available to the Haitian Justice to advance the investigation and that those responsible for the murder be brought to justice.

The United Nations recalled that the case has been in the hands of five judges, with hardly any progress.

Likewise, he pointed out that since this crime was committed, the growing insecurity, linked to the proliferation of acts of violence committed by armed gangs, has terrified Haitian citizens and has monopolized public debate in a context where the challenges facing the country they increase day by day.

President Moise was gunned down a year ago in his private residence in Port-au-Prince at the hands of a commando.

The complexity of the crime, added to the adverse circumstances that Haiti is experiencing, led the Prime Minister, Ariel Henry, to request help in resolving the case from the United Nations (UN) General Assembly, two and a half months after the assassination.

40 people arrested

More recently, it was Moise’s family that sent a communication to the UN special rapporteur for arbitrary and extrajudicial executions, in which he pointed out, with evidence and details, “the will of certain people, institutions and governments to prevent the proper functioning of Justice” in this case.

Some 40 people are detained for the assassination, many of them former Colombian military members of the assault command, while the investigation into the case is at a standstill a year after the crime.

The alleged intellectual author of the murder is, according to local authorities, Christian Emmanuel Sanon, a doctor who lived in Florida, USA, until his arrest four days after the assassination.
