IBGE estimates crop of 261.4 million tons in 2022

The Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) estimated the Brazilian crop of cereals, pulses and oilseeds in 2022 at 261.4 million tons. 07) by the agency. Although the figure is 3.2% or 8.2 million tons more than the 2021 crop of 253.2 million, the index is 0.6% below the May estimate or 1.5 million.IBGE estimates crop of 261.4 million tons in 2022

The area to be harvested reaches 72.5 million hectares, which means an increase of 5.8% or 4 million hectares compared to last year’s result. In relation to the May projection, it represents growth of around 209.4 thousand hectares or 0.3%. The three main products of the research, rice, corn and soy together, are equivalent to 91.7% of the estimated production and account for 87.5% of the area to be harvested.

Rice

Rice production should reach 10.7 million tons. The value means a drop of 2.2% in the area and a decrease of 8.1% for the production of paddy rice.

Soy

For soybeans, main commodity of the country, the estimate is a fall of 0.5% in relation to the previous month. National production should total 118.0 million tons, a drop of 12.6% compared to 2021. According to the research manager, Carlos Barradas, the harvest was impacted by weather effects. “It was marked by adverse climatic effects, with a record of severe drought during the development of the crop in the south-central states of the country”, he observed.

Corn

The estimate of corn production indicated 111.2 million tons. Even representing a decline of 0.8% compared to the previous projection, the volume showed growth of 26.7% compared to last year, or 23.4 million tons more.

“After a sharp drop in production in 2021, the effects of the delay in planting and the lack of rain in the main producing places, a year within normal climatic conditions is expected, notably during the second harvest season, which is the main and should account for 76.8% of Brazilian production”, added the manager, adding that with this estimate, national corn production should be a record in 2022.

Wheat

Wheat, which is one of the main winter cereals in the country, has an estimated production of 8.9 million tons. The number represents a reduction of 0.2% compared to the previous month. However, compared to 2021, it is an increase of 13.4%. The average yield should reach 3,139 kg/ha, growth of 11.6%. Barradas said that the increase in wheat production is related to the product’s prices, which have risen because of the war between Russia and Ukraine. The two countries are major producers and exporters of the cereal. “National production has increased, with the Southern Region accounting for 89.8% of Brazil’s wheat production in 2022,” he said.

Regions

The estimated production of cereals, pulses and oilseeds in June increased in four regions of the country compared to 2021. In the Midwest it rises 10.7%, in the North 5.5%, in the Southeast 13.3%, and in the Northeast 11%. Only the South recorded a drop of 14%.

States

Among the federation units, Tocantins (35.9 thousand tons), Rondônia (25 thousand tons), Acre (10.5 thousand tons), Ceará (9.5 thousand tons) stood out with increases in compared to May. In a downward movement are Paraná (587.4 thousand t.), Goiás (420.1 thousand t.), Minas Gerais (287.2 thousand t.) and Mato Grosso do Sul (266.5 thousand t.).

The largest national producer of grains is Mato Grosso, with a share of 30.3%, followed by Paraná (13.8%), Goiás (10.6%), Rio Grande do Sul (9.4%), Mato Grosso do Sul (8.2%) and Minas Gerais (6.7%). Together they represented 79.0% of the national total.

Agricultural production

According to the IBGE, the Systematic Survey of Agricultural Production was implemented in November 1972 to meet the demands of users for monthly conjunctural statistical information. The survey provides estimates of areas, planted and harvested, quantity produced and average yield of selected products based on criteria of economic and social importance for the country.

“It allows not only the monitoring of each crop investigated, from the planting intention phase until the end of the harvest, in the reference calendar year, but also the forecast of the following year’s crop, for which the survey is carried out in the months October, November and December”, he informed.
