Santo Domingo. – The Dominican Republic received this Wednesday the Pro Tempore Presidency (PPT) of the Central American Integration System (SICA), to continue advancing in the strengthening of the regional guidelines established in this organization in order to continue the path towards the development of the member countries. in a sustainable way.
In this Presidency that will begin its work from July 1 of this year, assumed for the third time since it is a member of SICA, the country welcomes the motto “Adapting regional integration to new challenges”, in order to strengthen this mechanism and draw up an agenda that addresses the common problems faced by the States that comprise it.
By participating in the act virtually, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Roberto Álvarez, expressed the commitment of the country and President Luis Abinader to regional integration, in which the Dominican Republic will support itself to work for the six months that it will last in this position. .
“With the assumption of this PPT, the Dominican Republic is committed to drawing strategic lines that will contribute to the economic, social and, above all, institutional strengthening of the region, seeking unity and joint work, since only together will we overcome difficulties. Together, leaving no one behind”, said the Dominican diplomat.
This Pro Tempore Presidency was delivered in person by the Foreign Minister of Panama, Erika Mouynes, to the Vice Minister for Economic Affairs and International Cooperation of MIREX, Hugo Francisco Rivera. While Foreign Minister Álvarez was accompanied in his virtual participation by the Vice Minister of Multilateral Foreign Policy, Rubén Silié; the director of Commercial Integration, Carmen Elena Ibarra; and the person in charge of Trade Integration for Caribbean Affairs, José Guillermo Sarita.
During this period, the Dominican Republic will be in charge of coordinating sectoral meetings where topics such as democratic security, climate change, comprehensive risk management, social and economic integration, and institutional strengthening will be addressed, which will be submitted to the LVI Summit of Heads of State. and the Government of SICA to be held in the country in December 2022 to transfer the Presidency to Belize.
On this occasion, the Dominican Presidency of SICA exhibits a logo that shows distinctive elements of the country such as its flag and the national bird, the palm cigua, the first extended in a silhouette of the Central American map.
SICA is a regional integration mechanism made up of the Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Honduras, Costa Rica, Panama, El Salvador, Belize and Nicaragua.
