Moscow, Dec 9 (Prensa Latina) The State Atomic Energy Corporation of Russia (Rosatom) and the Nicaraguan Foreign Ministry signed a memorandum of understanding on cooperation in the use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, the local press highlighted today.
Signed in Moscow by Rosatom’s Deputy Director General for International Affairs, Nikolai Spassky, and the Nicaraguan ambassador to this country, Alba Torres, the document lays the foundations for the development of nuclear infrastructure in the Central American nation.
In addition, for the application of this energy source in the sectors of industry, agriculture and medicine, as well as the awareness of the population about the use of these technologies.
The approval of the memorandum was preceded by a meeting of the representative of the Russian cooperation with Iván Acosta, Minister of Finance and Credit of Nicaragua and co-chair of the Russian-Nicaraguan Intergovernmental Commission for Trade, Economic, Scientific and Technical Cooperation.
The Nicaraguan president’s special representative for relations with Russia, Laureano Ortega, and the presidential representative, Rafael Ortega, also participated in the meeting.
The parties agreed that as soon as the epidemiological situation caused by the Covid-19 pandemic improves, both countries will organize broad consultations to establish the practical content of the memorandum.
Visiting this capital this week, the Managua delegation was also received by the Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Riabkov, who described the external pressure on that country as unacceptable.
The Russian Deputy Foreign Minister stressed that the actions against Nicaragua could unbalance the internal situation in the country and generate new regional sources of tension.
This Tuesday the group participated in the inauguration of the Russian-Nicaraguan Association for Economic Cooperation, a new alliance considered a very important step to promote bilateral trade by the presidential advisor for Investments, Trade and Cooperation of Nicaragua, Laureano Ortega.
