Brasília will be the first capital in the country to have the 5G network in operation in mobile telephony. According to the adviser and vice president of the National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel), Moisés Moreira, the signal will be released in Brasília this Wednesday (6th).
Participating in the Teletime Inc event, in São Paulo, Anatel’s technical group in charge of evaluating the vacancy of the 3.5 gigahertz (GHz) band approved the activation of the 5G signal in the federal capital this afternoon (4). According to Moreira, the next capitals to have the technology released will be Belo Horizonte, Porto Alegre and São Paulo, with no date set for now.
Moreira chairs the Anatel group responsible for releasing the 3.5 GHz frequencies, through which the 5G telephony signal will travel. Currently, this band is still occupied by satellite dish companies that operate with C Band technology and are lagging behind with the migration to another frequency, called Ku Band.
originally the 5G auction notice, carried out in November last year, provided that all capitals should be served by 5G telephony until July 31. However, problems with chip shortages and delays in the production and importation of electronic equipment related to the Covid-19 pandemic caused schedule delays.
The deadline for the operation of 5G in all capitals has been extended to September 29. According to Moreira, the launch of the 5G network in Brasília will serve as a test, with Anatel and the operators installing anti-interference filters. It is also planned to distribute Ku Band decoders to the low-income population using old satellite dishes operating in C Band.
