During the day this Monday, the Constitutional Convention delivered the proposal for a new Constitution to the President of the Republic, Gabriel Boric. This is part of the final stretch of the constitutional process that concludes on September 4.
In this sense, the mayors of Peñalolén, Carolina Leitao; Quinta Normal, Karina Delfino and the mayors of Maipú, Tomás Vodanovic; Renca, Claudio Castro, wrote a joint declaration where they showed their position in the face of the election.
“From the experience of our work in the communes that we represent, we value the strengths of the proposed new Constitutional text. Even with its obvious imperfections -which we understand as something typical of a process like the one we have experienced-, we believe that it feels the bases to continue a path that will take years and that will require the formation of majorities that democratically work for its correct implementation and improvement,” they stated.
Along the same lines, they maintained that “from our different visions we approve this new Constitution to build a new Chile, a country that will leave behind the Subsidiary State to become a Social and Democratic State of Rights.”
“This fact alone is very significant. Historically, the communal governments have been the actors that have responded, with scant tools, prerogatives and resources, to the most basic needs of our neighbors. The constitutional range of social rights (health , education, pensions, housing, among others) is the first and main advance of the draft.Those of us who work in the municipal world know the urgency of the people and communities that do not have guaranteed the minimum subsistence that these rights represent, which in many cases have been relegated to the logic of the market”, they indicated.
“The September election seals the beginning of a new political and social cycle for Chile. It is an opportunity to strengthen the unity of the progressive forces with a view to a common goal: the approval of this new constitutional political pact and the leadership, from the Government, of the great reforms in the most urgent matters that our neighbors demand,” they added.
“Just as in 2020 we made a united call for a new social pact to confront the injustices and inequalities in our country after the Social Outburst, today our invitation is once again unity to promote a campaign of hope and joy, which runs through every corner of Chile, summoning and explaining to citizens how the demand for a decent and fair Chile is with the option I approve of the New Constitution”, they concluded.
