PRD celebrates 61 years of its arrival in the country

The Dominican Revolutionary Party (PRD) commemorates today with various activities the 61st anniversary of its arrival in the country, on July 5, 1961.

The PRD authorities reported that the commemorative activities will be held at the National House of the organization from 8:00 in the morning with the presentation of a floral offering and will continue with several conferences on the history of the white party.

The first advanced party of the PRD arrived on July 5, 1961, after the execution of the tyrant Rafael L. Trujillo, made up of three of its leaders Ramón Castillo, Ángel Miolán and Nicolás Silfa.

The PRD was founded in Cuba in 1939, by a group of exiled Dominicans headed by Professor Juan Bosch. After his arrival in the country, the political organization was activated and won the 1962 elections with Bosch as presidential candidate.

That government was overthrown by a military coup just seven months after being installed. Then it was divided in 1973 with the departure of Bosch who founded the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) and José Francisco Peña Gómez remained as the leader of the jacho party.

The PRD won the elections again in 1978 with Antonio Guzmán and remained in power after winning the 1982 elections, this time with Salvador Jorge Blanco.

In 1986 he lost power and won again in 2000 with Hipólito Mejía and returned to the opposition in 2004.

Since then, the PRD has not won elections again and in 2016, after the division that gave rise to the ruling Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM), the PRD, for the first time in history, fell to a distant third place, then of an alliance with the PLD.

In the 2020 elections, it had a much lower electoral performance that brought it to the brink of losing majority party status. At this stage, the PRD is under the leadership of Miguel Vargas, who has chaired it since 2007.

The PRD was devised by a group of exiled Dominicans

The foundation of the Dominican Revolutionary Party was on January 21, 1939, in Villa de El Cano, near Havana, Cuba. On that date, the formation of the PRD was discussed, whose founders were Enrique Cotubanamá Henríquez, Ángel Miolán, Nicolás Silfa, Juan Isidro Jiménez Grullón, Juan Bosch, Virgilio Mainardi Reyna, Lucas Pichardo, Pipi Hernández, Plinda Woss and Gill, Manuel Alexis Liz , and Romano Pérez Cabral, as stated in several writings on the subject.
