Educators announce work stoppage for 72 hours extendable

On the afternoon of this Monday, July 4, the Association of Educators of Veragüenses (AEVE) decreed a strike for 72 hours, extendable from tomorrow, Tuesday, July 5, 2022.

According to Luis Arturo Sánchez H. Secretary General of the AEVE said that the demands of the teachers are focused on the high cost of living, fuel and the poor conditions of the schools.

Sánchez said that the police repressed them with tear gas that is not authorized to be used, so he asked the Ombudsman to investigate what happened this afternoon.

He denounced that there are teachers beaten because he assures that they were shot with objects that caused physical damage.

The AEVE protested in the main streets of the province of Veraguas, while on the premises of the National Assembly, teachers’ unions such as the Association of Independent Teachers of Panama and the National Union of Educators of Panama, also demonstrated.

Eddy Pinto, leader of the UNEP, said that the two main points of their protests are that the price of fuel falls and the high cost of the basic basket and medicines; They also demand more jobs, teacher appointments, that students be given cookies and milk in schools and grains be provided in hard-to-reach areas.

Joaquín Rodríguez, one of the leaders, assured that they will remain in the streets until they get a response from the National Assembly or a minister of state.

He said that the fight that educators have undertaken belongs to all Panamanians, so he urged the population to join these protests and claim for a better country.

In the provinces of Panamá Oeste, Herrera, Bocas del Toro and Chiriquí they also protested making the same social claims.
