The physical and health condition of the political prisoner Félix Maradiaga has caused alarm about the situation of all the political prisoners In Nicaragua. The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Luis Almagro, and the Venezuelan politician, Leopoldo López, spoke in favor of Maradiaga’s release.
Presidential hopeful Felix Maradiaga has lost more than 60 pounds in weight. He is subjected to solitary confinement, poor nutrition, a few minutes of sunlight and under torture at all hours of the day, his wife Berta Valle denounced yesterday, July 1, at a press conference.
After more than a year in prison, Maradiaga has lost weight, the color of his skin has changed, to the point of looking yellowish; and he too has lost hair. A spoken portrait of the political prisoner shows him emaciated.

“We are concerned about the serious deterioration in the health of Félix Maradiaga, Ortega’s political prisoner in Nicaragua. Our support for him and his wife @bertavalle. We raise our voices for his release and that of all political prisoners in countries under authoritarian regimes,” Leopoldo López wrote on his Twitter account.
Almagro expressed his solidarity with Berta Valle, wife of Maradiaga, who denounced the serious state of health of her spouse one year after his confinement in “El Chipote”.
«Our solidarity with Félix Maradiaga -on a hunger strike since June 21- and all political prisoners in #Nicaragua, who are subjected to inhuman treatment and daily torture. Daniel Ortega’s regime is responsible for the life of Maradiaga and all political prisoners,” Almagro tweeted on the social network’s account.
Josefina Vijil, a relative of political prisoners Ana Margarita Vijil and mother of Tamara Dávila, assured that “it is URGENT that Chipote be opened, to verify the status of (Félix) @maradiaga and all of our relatives!” In addition, I demand that the isolation and torture of the more than 190 political prisoners cease and that “boys and girls be able to visit their mothers and fathers.”
Maradiaga was captured on June 8, 2021, a few meters from the Public Ministry in Managua, minutes before he had been interrogated by Daniel Ortega’s prosecutors. After his arrest, he was transferred to “El Chipote”, a well-known torture center, according to the relatives of political prisoners.
The Ortega justice imposed a sentence of 13 years in prison. The hostage of conscience faced seven hearings that, according to his defenders, were “riddled with irregularities” that culminated in a guilty verdict.
