The Institute of Cuban Meteorology (Insmet) issued tropical cyclone warnings this Friday before the formation of the storm “Bonnie”, which is already crossing Nicaragua. Hours later, at dawn on Saturday, another report detailed the formation of “Colin”, the third named tropical organism of the current hurricane season.
“Bonnie” would slightly slow down, with little change in intensity before reaching the east coast of Nicaragua, a region that it is about to leave behind at the close of this article. It had a translation speed of 31 kilometers per hour (km/h) and was moving west, with maximum sustained winds of 65 km/h.

Meanwhile, during the early hours of the morning, the low pressure area located near the east coast of South Carolina continued to organize and became the tropical storm “Colin”, which at five in the morning was located on the south coast of Carolina. South, at 33.2 degrees North latitude and 79.5 degrees West longitude, about 80 kilometers southwest of Mirtle Beach, South Carolina.
Insmet announced in May that it expected a “very active” cyclone season in the Atlantic, with up to nine potential hurricanes, at least one of which could affect Cuba.
Last hurricane season (which always begins on June 1 and ends on November 30) resulted in 21 named storms, of which seven became hurricanes, and two of them hit Cuba: Elsa and Ida. Both left damage to the roofs of houses, agriculture and the electrical system, in addition to felling trees.
The last time a large hurricane affected the Island was in 2017 when Irma crossed the north coast from east to west and left ten dead and material losses officially valued at 13,185 million dollars.
