This Saturday, July 2, the 50th Ordinary Congress of the Socialist Party of Uruguay was held in tribute to former legislators Guillermo Chifflet and Artigas Barrios (also the first left-wing mayor of Rocha).
The secretary general of the Socialist Party, Gonzalo Civila, referred to the fact that the world is experiencing a “civilization crisis” that questions the way in which we human beings relate to each other and to nature.
“A system that leaks everywhere, that generates a lot of inequality and injustice,” said Civila.
creative and brave
The socialist legislator also referred to “the crisis that Uruguay is experiencing, as a result of the policies of a government that defends very minority interests, of a very rich and powerful sector of the population, and that is adjusting wages, public spending , generating a lot of violence on the part of the State towards the poorest and working sectors”.
“Faced with this reality, we have to act. Uruguayan socialism has always tried to be creative in its proposals and brave in its ideas. It is not about restoring the progressivism of the previous 15 years, which had many achievements, but also errors; it is about projecting a new proposal, an alternative for social change that has to begin by discussing structural aspects of life in Uruguay so that we can have a decent life”, he said.
Civila stated that measures must be taken to: “limit the profits of sectors that are earning a lot of money, avoid the concentration of capital, strengthen food and community policies, favor cooperatives, the social economy, and build a fairer society by putting discusses the role of the Armed Forces, because Uruguay is among the 30 countries in the world that has the most soldiers per capita”.
