On July 31, 2019, prosecutor Luis Piñánez charged deputy Miguel Cuevas with illicit enrichment and false statement, however, three years after that fact, countless Chicanas have already appeared to prevent the case from going to trial. Today the parliamentarian’s defense challenged the Sentencing Court so that the proceeding is not initiated.
Today, for the second time this week, the parties were called to begin the oral trial where deputy Miguel Cuevas is the only defendant, but his lawyer, Guillermo Duarte Cacavelos, challenged the members of the Sentencing Court with the sole intention of delaying the trial. judgment. Last Tuesday, Duarte Cacavelos himself challenged prosecutor Luis Piñanez.
Since the process began for Cuevas, Chicanas were always the order of the day. Cuevas first played in the political arena by delaying his impeachment for a month, where there was no quorum to analyze the impeachment request. However, at the end of August 2019, it was finally decided to remove the privileges from the deputy and have him face justice. Miguel Cuevas said that he had nothing to fear and that he was happy to be able to prove his innocence to the judge, but that was just a speech, since since August 2019 with Chicanas after Chicanas until today the judgment.
The Prosecutor’s Office indicates in its accusation that between 2009 and 2019, deputy Miguel Cuevas had income for the sum of G. 5,734,307,036, while his expenses were G. 7,439,622,171. Beginning of the Chicanas
On August 28, 2019, Cuevas was left without privileges and said that he was going to submit to justice, but on the 30th of that month he already presented his first chicana, he asked that the case be taken to the courts of Paraguarí, where he intended to with political pressure cook the case in their favor. Finally two months later the request was rejected.
Cuevas was summoned for the hearing for the imposition of measures only in November four months after being charged, but as expected they presented incidents against the accusation and that meant that the case was no longer dealt with in that year only in 2020 after the judicial fair in February the parliamentarian was summoned again to the hearing and once again there was an incident. The deputy’s defense move was to prevent the hearing from taking place since the prosecution requested prison and they wanted to avoid that.
On February 14, 2020, Judge Yoan Paul López held the hearing and ordered the imprisonment of Miguel Cuevas in the Specialized Group of the National Police. However, while Cuevas was in prison, he continued to challenge members of the Court of Appeal who denied him his freedom.

Three times it was requested to revoke Cuevas’s prison, all were rejected and his imprisonment was confirmed, until on September 25, 2020, the Court of Appeals revoked the preventive detention of the parliamentarian and gave him alternative measures to prison, after seven months Behind bars.
On October 6, 2020, the prosecution accused Miguel Cuevas of the facts of illicit enrichment and false statement, requesting the elevation of the case to oral and public trial. Since October 2020, efforts are being made to comply with the request of the Public Ministry.
Time and time again, the preliminary hearing in which it was to be decided whether the Cuevas case would go to trial or not was suspended, due to challenges and other merely dilatory incidents, however, no judge dared to sanction Miguel Cuevas or his lawyer, Guillermo Duarte. On July 5, 2021, Judge Yoan Paul López managed to hold the preliminary hearing and raised the case for Miguel Cuevas to oral and public trial. One year later, the start of the trial for different Chicanas was suspended three times.
This week the lawyer Guillermo Duarte Cacavelos managed to suspend the start of the trial twice, first he challenged the prosecutor Piñánez, as the agent was confirmed, now he challenged the Sentencing Court and so with total impunity Miguel Cuevas remains unpunished.
