The Municipality of Montevideo announced that it will extend until August 15 the public consultation on the initiative to create a new income that will have to be paid by the large companies that generate waste. The objective is to strengthen participation in the construction of public policies.
Given the large number of contributions received, and that some actors have not yet done so but are interested in making their contributions, the commune decided to extend the term of the consultation, in order to ensure the broadest participation. Those who wish to express themselves can do so by completing a form.
The creation of a payment for large companies that release waste is contemplated in Plan V, defined by the commune to advance in environmental management, after the Departmental Board did not approve the loan that the Inter-American Development Bank was going to grant ( IDB) for sanitation and environmental works.
The basic concept of this idea is that the cost of waste management does not fall entirely on the population as a whole -as it happens today, configuring an unfair system- and that the generators of materials contribute proportionally to financing it.
For this, it is proposed creation of a consideration-type income -such as a rate or a price- so that the large manufacturing and importing companies must pay for the management cost of the Intendancy, from the introduction of these materials in Montevideo and that they do not justify having recovered.
This definition is integrated into the Montevideo más Verde environmental strategy, which incorporates a new vision for the management of waste and recyclable materials throughout the department, through the implementation of best practices that necessarily lead to the elimination of inequities.
