Cuba: Electric Union announces blackouts for this Thursday

Apagones, Cuba

Madrid Spain.- Cubans will continue to suffer from blackouts this Thursday, according to the Cuban Electrical Union (UNE), due to a lack of generation capacity.

During the day an affectation of 550 MW is estimated. While for peak hours a maximum demand of 2,850 MW is forecast, when there is an availability of 2,593 MW, there will be an affectation of 327 MW.

According to an informative note shared by the UNE through Facebookunits 6, 7 and 8 of the Máximo Gómez Thermoelectric Power Plant (CTE), the Otto Parellada CTE unit, unit 4 of the Carlos Manuel de Céspedes CTE and units 5 and 6 of CTE Antonio Maceo.

In addition, the CTE Antonio Guiteras unit and CTE Lidio Ramón Pérez unit 2 are undergoing maintenance.

“The night was hellish. All night without power. It’s not two hours anymore, not even four. It is a lack of respect, of consideration for people”; “The more availability there is, the more demand rises. They no longer know how to make fun of us”, comment the Cubans, for whom the blackouts are becoming unsustainable.

The country’s energy crisis, which has been increasing in recent months, has caused demonstrations in different regions of the island. Such is the case of the student protest at the “Ignacio Agramonte” University of Camagüey and the saucepan in the town of Manzanillo, in the province of Granma; both in the middle of the current month.

President Miguel Díaz-Canel recently declared that Cuba does not have the electrical capacity “for what the life of the population is demanding,” but that “the government is making every effort to affect the population as little as possible.”

Regarding the poor state of the country’s thermoelectric plants, he pointed out: “An investment in thermoelectric plants is extremely expensive and takes years. Immediately it is not possible to mount a thermoelectric plant. It takes between four and five years of investment”.

The president also He suggested Cubans take advantage of solar energy.
