Containerized cargo carriers remain on indefinite unemployment until resolution is lifted

After months of sharing dialogue tables, debate and positive contributions with the national government, seeking to safeguard the country’s land cargo industry, the National Cargo Transport Coordinator had as a result that through the Transit and Land Transport Authority of Panama (ATTT) will approve in board of directors resolution No. JD-33-2022 of May 30, 2022 to establish minimum rates in the transport of land cargo in containers and vans from any port to any destination in the country and Central America.

Daniel Rojas, from the National Freight Transportation Coordinator, indicated that these rates are necessary due to the constant increase in fuel and all the inputs used by the land freight transportation industry.

He stressed that they have made an approach with the shipping companies, and most agreed on the new rates, with the exception of Ocean Network Express (One) and the Maritime Chamber, which in fact are the ones that presented these resources through their representatives.

Rojas stated that they will go on strike for an indefinite period of time in the face of “injustice and the manipulation that exists on the part of businessmen and lawyers who represent their personal and economic interests, and not those of the Panamanian people.”

In turn, they give Enrique Clement, president of the Chamber of Shipping and Marketing and Customer Service Manager of Manzanillo International Terminal, a period of five business days to withdraw the appeal filed. Also a term of five business days to Julio de la Lastra of Ocean Network Express (One) and his lawyer Alberto López Tom, union leader who represents the private company.
