The National Justice Board (JNJ) reported today that Delia Milagros Espinoza Valenzuela is the new supreme prosecutor after the Public Ministry enabled a position and required an immediate call to fill it.
Espinoza became a reserve candidate after placing third in the last contest for two top prosecutor positions, that Patricia Benavides and Juan Carlos Villena finally won.
The JNJ reported that after being sworn in, Delia Espinoza will join the Board of Supreme Prosecutors (JFS) and thus complete the five positions that make up that administrative body.
However, a curiosity was registered. Peru21 was able to confirm that the JNJ has made this designation by a call launched in the management of Zoraida Ávalos (2019-2022), after the dismissal of Supreme Prosecutor Víctor Rodríguez Monteza. Fiscal sources indicated that Pablo Sánchez, current interim prosecutor of the Nation, was surprised by this decision.
The magistrate is close to the former prosecutor of the Nation, Zoraida Ávalos, who in December 2021 appointed her as provisional supreme prosecutor. Ávalos and Espinoza will now have a vote in the JFS.
The rest of the members are Sánchez, Juan Carlos Villena and Patricia Benavides, the new head of the Public Ministry.
