Violent deaths fall 6% in Brazil in 2021, according to yearbook

The record of intentional violent deaths, last year, fell by 6.5% throughout Brazil, pointed out today (28) the Brazilian Public Security Yearbook, document released by the Brazilian Public Security Forum. In absolute numbers, notifications went from 50,448 deaths in 2020 to 47,503 last year, the lowest level since 2011, when they reached 47,215. Since then, the highest level recorded was in 2017, with 64,078 deaths. In 76% of cases last year, intentional deaths were caused by firearms.

All regions of the country showed a drop in the indicator, with the exception of the North Region, where they went from 5,758 notifications in 2020 to 6,291 last year, with an increase in Pará, Amapá, Amazonas, Rondônia and Roraima. There was also an absolute increase in two other Brazilian states: Bahia and Piauí.

According to the Yearbook, despite the improvement in the indicator, Brazil still experiences extreme violence, accounting for one in five homicides that occur in the world (20.4% of the total). Most victims of these violent and intentional deaths in the country are black (77.9%), male (91.3%) and young people between 12 and 29 years old (50% of the total).

The Yearbook also surveyed the 30 most violent cities in the country between 2019 and 2021.

According to the balance sheet, 13 of them are part of the Legal Amazon, where the rate of lethal violence was 38% higher than the national average: in Brazil, this rate is 22.3 intentional violent deaths per 100,000 inhabitants, while in the Amazon Cool, it figures in 30.9 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants.

The most violent city in the country in the period was São João do Jaguaribe (CE), followed by Jacareacanga (PA), Aurelino Leal (BA), Santa Luzia D’Oeste (RO), São Felipe D’Oeste (RO) and Floresta do Araguaia (PA).
