The political prisoners Samantha Jirón and Evelyng Pinto, detained in the La Esperanza women’s prison, were transferred to cells shared with common prisoners, without the prison authorities providing a justification for the change, sources related to the prison confirmed to CONFIDENTIAL.

The movement occurred after 6:00 pm last Friday, June 24. The source warned that the opponents will be watched by other prisoners, in addition that they are “vulnerable” to the aggression of some common area.

Both political prisoners were captured last December during a wave of arrests orchestrated by Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo, in the 2021 electoral context. Jirón and Pinto were held in maximum security cells, guarded 24 hours a day, with restricted access and without permission. to participate in educational or recreational activities of La Esperanza.

In the new cell, which is more of a warehouse, 65 women remain, revealed the source, who added that the restrictions continue because the two political prisoners cannot join the activities of the prison and sunbathe at different times than the rest of the prisoners. .

The regime maintains 180 prisoners of conscience in the different prison systems of the country, according to the Mechanism for the recognition of political prisoners. Of that amount, 18 are women and of these, five are in La Esperanza; two are housed in jail; one remains in the Granada prison; four in the Chontales system; and six are imprisoned in the Directorate of Judicial Assistance (DAJ), El Chipote.

Political prisoners María Esperanza Sánchez, Karla Escobar Maldonado and Julia Hernández Arévalo are also being held in La Esperanza; who have remained in cells in common areas.

Against the prisoners in El Chipote, the regime has been cruel, subjecting them to complete isolation, cruel treatment, torture, hunger, cold and the deprivation of not seeing their children and relatives on frequent visits. His relatives have warned of the risk that his health could worsen and the violations of his human rights.

Sentenced to eight years in prison

Both Pinto and Jirón were sentenced to eight years in prison for the crimes of conspiracy to undermine national integrity and propagation of false news.

Pinto, 63, She is a recognized human rights defender, especially, she worked on causes of defense of the rights of children and adolescents. In addition, she participated in plans for inclusive education and collaborated closely with the indigenous peoples on the issue of territory and the legal framework that would allow them to defend their spaces.

Her state of health worries her relatives because she is a cancer survivor, she does not have a thyroid gland and she suffers from chronic kidney failure and hypertension, for which she requires specialized follow-up.

Jirón, 22, was member of the Blue and White National Unity, She was exiled in Costa Rica after the demonstrations against the regime that broke out in April 2018, she returned to Nicaragua in 2020 and was arrested a year later.
