The unemployment rate in Mexico increased to 3.4% in May

Compared to May 2021, the sector with the greatest increase in its employed population was commerce, with 920,000 more people, followed by the manufacturing industry, and restaurants and accommodation services with increases of 671,000 and 552,000 people, respectively.

On the contrary, the sectors with the greatest decrease, compared to May 2021, were the government sector, with 596,000 fewer people, and the construction sector, losing 120,902 employed people.

Population that studies or is retired grows

The unemployed population in May was 1.9 million people, which still represents 352,000 fewer people than in May 2021.

The economically active population, that is, the one that is employed or is looking for a job, was 59.1 million people. This is 400,000 fewer people than in April.

On the other hand, the population that is not economically active and that works at home, studies or is retired, etc. It was 40 million people, almost half a million more than in the previous month and almost the same number of people who stopped being employed between both months.

Low wages and informality

32.8% of workers earned up to one minimum wage and 32.7% earned between 1 and 2 minimum wages. In addition, 27% of the employed worked more than 48 hours.

In May, the employed population was 31.8 million people and the labor informality rate was 55.6% of the employed population, which represents an increase of 0.1 percentage points compared to April.
