This Monday the act of the PIT-CNT was held 49 years after the historic General Strike that began on June 27, 1973 and lasted 15 days, in resistance to the coup d’état.
The act was carried out under the slogan: “The working class will not fail”, and the following participated in the oratory part: Rodrigo Arim, rector of the University of the Republic; Lucia Bula (SUTEL); Federico Kreimerman (FFOSE), and Elbia Pereira (PIT-CNT).
“Yesterday like today, together with citizens and workers, the University of the Republic is present”, remarked Arim, who thanked the invitation to the event.
For her part, Elbia Pereira stated that today, when some are trying to revive the “Theory of the two demons” and rewrite history, we must stand firm and calmly and firmly say out loud: that the coup d’état is not gave the devil were accomplices and military civilians who did not pay for their acts of attacking democracy and the lives of thousands of compatriots.
He affirmed that it is impossible to build a healthy and free society for the new generations, without justice, without memory and without knowing the truth about the fate of the disappeared detainees.
New ways in which democracy is attacked
“This date should also serve us to talk and reflect on new ways in which democracy is attacked and, for this reason, today we need to talk and debate about the policies promoted by the government that, in addition to attacking the unions with some of the their actions are trying to curtail freedoms”, denounced the union leader.
He added that “some of those who govern today do not like the unions, or the teachers, or the teachers. They don’t like poetry, nor poets, they hate those who paint daisies on the walls. Some of this government hate those who put the tender look of Luisa Cuesta on a soccer jersey, some hate those who sing and dance with drums in the streets, and even carnival.
“The government says that it came to bring order, that recess is over, that the Judiciary has been infiltrated and the University of the Republic is a factory of indoctrination; In any case, we will have to notify the government that today, like every June 27, history reminds us that they will not pass and that history will judge them,” said Elbia Pereira.
“For memory, truth and justice and for the new generations: Never more State terrorism and long live the Uruguayan people!”, he sentenced.
