The Ministry of Production (Produce) reported that during 2021 a business sector recoveryregistering a total of 2,129,000 formal companies, a figure 19% higher than in 2020. In this sense, Minister Jorge Prado Palomino highlighted that this result shows the reactivation of 340,292 companies nationwide compared to the previous year.
“The pandemic affected companies of all sizes in the country, but we see that in 2021 there were clear signs of recovery, that is good news”assured.
According to figures from the General Office for Impact Assessment and Economic Studies of Produce, the recovery of the total number of formal companies occurred mainly in microenterprises with an increase of 19.4% (331,269 companies) and large companies with 24.1% ( 2,116 companies). And to a lesser extent, it increased in small companies with 9.3% and medium-sized companies with 3.5%.

In addition, among the main regions that managed to recover from the bankruptcy of registered companies during 2020 we have Lima with 16.2% (133,662 companies), Arequipa with 20.4% (21,403 companies), La Libertad with 19.9% (18,505 companies), Piura with 26.3% (18,220 companies), Callao with 24.3% (13,326 companies) and Puno with 28.7% (13,108 companies).
By sectors
Meanwhile, the economic sectors that registered a greater increase in the number of formal companies, compared to 2020, we have commerce with 18.8% (150,848 companies), services with 19.3% (139,257 companies), manufacturing with 17.9% (27,679 companies) and construction with 22.2% (14,533 companies). Although the other sectors also managed to recover, their increase was less than 4,000 new companies.
Finally, the total number of formal companies reached 2,129,192 companies, of which 95.6% (2,035,014) are micro-enterprises, 3.8% (80,435) small companies, 0.1% (2,844) medium-sized companies, and 0.5% (10,899) large company.
