A man in Matanzas murders his 51-year-old wife and then commits suicide

The feminist platform I do believe you in Cuba announced this Monday the femicide of Yudith Guardado, 51, in the town of Coliseo, in Jovellanos, Matanzas. According to data offered, “the aggressor was her husband, who later committed suicide.”

The events, which occurred on June 23, were also verified by observers from the magazine Tense Wings. “Our condolences reach the couple’s son and daughter,” the activists wrote on their social networks.

YoSiTeCreo raised its demand once again, pointing to the island’s government. “We don’t understand how much more evidence is missing for this problem to be taken seriously in Cuba.” The platform noted that 15 murders of women have already been recorded so far this year.

In addition, they insist that this problem mainly affects women, but also “children and even men, as evidenced in the case” of Yudith Guardado and his partner.

The group took the opportunity to send its support to the province of Matanzas, where last Saturday the body of Claudia Montes Munozwho had been missing since June 11.

“We do not understand how much more evidence is needed for this problem to be taken seriously in Cuba”

Matanzas has been shocked by the unexplained death of the 22-year-old Montes, whose wake was held on June 25, in the municipality of Martí. “There is a high probability that this case is a sexual femicide,” the group said.

In the unfortunate case of Montes, the family evidenced the lack of attention on the part of the Police, “because the system does not respond to the specificity of gender-based violence”, insisted in its message Yo SíTeCreo in Cuba.

“The Cuban Police does not have the specific protocols to deal with and prevent femicides. Nor does it have established protocols to deal with the disappearance of people, where the first 48 hours are essential to save the lives of the victims.”

A report of Tense Wings recorded that at least 36 women died violently last year in Cuba, allegedly at the hands of their partners, and another 32 had a similar fate in 2020.

So far this year, these platforms have reported several cases of sexist violence, three of them registered in Havana and the eastern provinces of Las Tunas and Holguín.

The official statistics on sexist violence date from 2016 and show that 26.7% of women between the ages of 15 and 74 suffered some type of violence in their partner relationship in the 12 months prior to the study.
