A deserter who murdered three Marines at the Cerro base is sentenced to almost 30 years in prison

Desertor marina infante

This Monday the Justice sentenced Jonathan Bragundi, a young deserter from the navy who at dawn of May 31, 2020 broke into a naval base of the Navy in the Cerro de Montevideo and murdered three of his former companions to steal their weapons.

Homicide prosecutor Mirta Morales presented convincing arguments for Justice to apply a sentence of 29 years and six months in prison. Bragundi had been waiting for a sentence since June 2 of that year, when he was arrested for the events. Since then, he was charged with a very especially aggravated homicide and was waiting for the oral trial.

In addition to the sentence that reaches almost 30 years, the Justice ordered eliminatory measures whose duration ranges from one to nine years. In this case, it will be the Supreme Court of Justice who decides how much time within that parameter it will impose.

the triple homicide

On May 31, 2020, Bragundi entered through the flag of the guard post. The man knew the establishment because he served while he was an officer (he entered the Navy in 2014), until he was declared a deserter.

The criminal went to the bedroom and stole the glock pistol from Juan Escobar, who was asleep. The other two agents heard him and called him to stop, before which the murderer went to the office and killed Alan Rodríguez and Alex Guillenea. Later he returned to the bedroom and killed Escobar. He killed them all with shots to the head.

The subject took the weapons and left through the same place where he entered. Hours later he was captured. However, before his arrest, the man got rid of two pistols (which appeared abandoned on a neighborhood corner). The third was still held by Bragundi and was seized when they raided his house.
