More blackouts are expected in Cuba: the Guiteras thermoelectric plant stopped working, again

The Antonio Guiteras thermoelectric plant in Matanzas, the largest in Cuba, stopped working again early this Monday. As reported by the official pressthe plant “went out of service for maintenance”, but, they assure, it will be for “72 hours”.

This means something that is about to stop being news in Cuba: this week, more blackouts are expected.

Last Tuesday, the Electric Union of Cuba itself warned that there were seven units out of service “due to breakdowns” and another four “for maintenance.”

The Antonio Guiteras was already out of service last May, due, according to the official version, to lightning strike.

On June 16, Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel explained that a group of “repairs and maintenance that should lead us to stability in the coming months” had been contracted, despite the fact that in May he assured that the situation would be controlled for this June.

The same day, Omar Ramírez Mendoza, deputy director of the Cuban Electrical Union (UNE), also appeared to review the well-known poor state of the system, for which he recalled that of the 20 units in the country, 13 are out , a fact that he already offered at the Round Table also in May.

In that program it was recognized that the plants of the Island are generating less than 40% of its installed power and reserves were at zero.
