Expansion of the South Pier of Callao advances and prepares for the digitized future

The extension of the South terminal of the Port of Callao advance and prepare for digitized future that future investments will impose. This work will play a very important role in continuing to guarantee efficient and safe cargo flows.

The Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) promotes this work that already has an advance of 26% through the concessionaire company DP World Callao SRL

This is the creation of a dock that will have the capacity to simultaneously receive up to 3 Neo Panamax ships, measuring 43 meters wide and up to 371 meters long.

The South Dock of Callao will allow capacity to be increased to 1.9 million TEUs (20-foot containers) per year. It will extend 400 meters to 1,050 meters and the storage yard will grow to 39 hectares. Currently, it has a 650 meter long dock.

In addition, three new quayside gantry cranes and 16 yard cranes will be installed. This equipment will make it possible to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while maintaining a sustainable and environmentally responsible operation. It will have an equipment maintenance workshop and a system of power generators in case of emergency, among others.

This modern infrastructure will also have platforms for refrigerated containers and will have a capacity for 420 connections. It will also include a fuel station for terminal equipment and a spill pond.

It includes mandatory and additional investments, together representing an investment of US$ 350 million. The works began last September and it is estimated that it will start operations at the end of 2023.

With this expansion, due to the growth of the aforementioned port, foreign trade and the country’s economy will be invigorated and will directly benefit the Constitutional Province of Callao and the departments of Lima, Ica, Ancash and the central zone of the country, facilitating the export and import of products to these regions.

The first phase of the project consisted of the construction of the container terminal with a 650-meter mooring front, which corresponds to two berths. The execution of the first stage of the work was completed in August 2010.
