The cosmetics industry with great export potential

The Dominican industry cosmetics It has great export potential and according to data from the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Mipymes (MICM), the Dominican beauty products sector has a presence in more than 50 countries.

The data collected by the Vice Ministry of Industrial Development of the MICM indicate that part of the main export destinations of Dominican beauty products during the United States with a participation that exceeds 45 percent, followed by Mexico, Colombia, Haiti, Puerto Rico , among others.

On this subject, Katja Afheldt, ambassador of the European Union in the Republic, explained that exports from this sector have increased by more than 47 percent in the last seven years.

He also emphasized that the cosmetic industry in the Dominican Republic is an important source of jobs, generating more than 193,500.

According to the Export and Investment Center of the Dominican Republic (ProDominicana), the country exports a range of products belonging to the beauty sector. Through a study of the beauty sector, ProDominicana details that the main products exported from this sector are mixtures of odoriferous substances, beauty preparations, makeup and skin care (excluding medicines); preparations for oral hygiene, preparations for hair, preparations for shaving or before and after shaving (includes body deodorants), perfumes, toilet waters and essential oils.

Instead, the MICM, through the Economic Profile of the Beauty Products Industry of the Dominican Republic, indicates that during the 2012-2020 period, exports from this sector presented an average annual growth of approximately 4.2 percent. In particular, the document details, in this period, exports grew by 35.8 percent, going from 83.2 million dollars in 2012 to 113.0 million dollars in 2020.

The executive vice president of the Association of Industries (AIRD), Circe Almánzar, indicated that the Dominican industry of cosmetics it has the potential to increase exports and assures that: “We already have evidence that in a decade exports have multiplied by 40 times more. This means that there is a lot of potential.”

He noted that the industry cosmetics, only by accessing the market of countries like Canada they could be multiplying their exports by two. “And that is without counting other markets that with a little more push, with financial financing, could access. For example: markets in the Caribbean region that, although they are exporting, there are problems of transportation facilities that, if we could solve it with the Merchant Marine to make it faster, we can promote more exports”, Almánzar said.

The sector cosmetics was one of those affected by the pandemic in the Dominican Republic. An example of this is that in April 2020 the sector lost 41.8 percent of jobs and it was not until July 2021 that they recovered by 104.4 percent compared to March 2020.

Last week, the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Mipymes (MICM) and the Association of Industries of the Dominican Republic (AIRD) presented the results of the Program to Strengthen the Value Chain of the Dominican Industry of cosmeticswhich promoted the productive articulation, innovation and competitiveness in the industries of the sector.

Also participating in the activity was Celso Juan Marranzini, president of the AIRD; Fantino Polanco, Vice Minister of Industrial Development of MICM, on behalf of Minister Víctor -Ito- Bisonó, and Katja Afheldt, Ambassador of the European Union in the Dominican Republic, who highlighted the importance of the Program and the joint work between the public, private and international cooperation, as well as the permanent commitment of companies in the cosmetic sector to quality and increased exports.

About the “Program to Strengthen the Value Chain of the Dominican Industry of cosmeticsKatja Afheldt pointed out that: “This project has focused on the innovation and quality of the cosmetic industries. We have supported training, access to credit and good financial management practices, also promoting environmental regulations, management and cleaner production.”

Mariely Ponciano, project manager, also participated in the event, explaining that the Product Value Chain Strengthening Program cosmetics It was financed by the European Union and executed by AIRDnext to the MICM.

He explained that in this program more than 200 technicians and beauty salons increased their knowledge on issues of quality, financial management, exports and environmental management. Likewise, various studies, collaboration agreements were carried out, as well as other key actions for the cosmetics from the Dominican Republic.

In addition, 2,000 people trained, 160 technical assistance provided, 10 guides were made, 37 equipment was donated, a virtual sales platform and 10 important studies of intervention in the sector were carried out. cosmetics.
