“If Petro won with the concertation, this is a prelude that it will also happen here”

The Guasu Front joined an alliance formed by the opposition with a view to the 2023 elections, in an act marked by the triumph in Colombia of the economist, former guerrilla and former mayor of Bogotá Gustavo Petro.

The parties and movements of the Guasu Front, of which Senator and former President Fernando Lugo is a member, and of the “Ñemongeta for a New Homeland” formalized their adherence to the concertation, which already brings together several opposition organizations of different tendencies.

“If Petro won with the agreement, this is a prelude to what will happen here as well,” Lugo said to applause in his speech before a large group of attendees at the headquarters of the Superior Court of Electoral Justice (TSJE).

After recounting his emotion for the triumph of the Colombian leftist leader, the former president compared the agreement that brought the former mayor of Bogotá to power with the newly created coalition in Paraguay.

“These winds of agreement run through the entire geography of Latin America,” he said.

In this context, the left-wing senator stressed that this current found them in Paraguay “concerted” and “united”, to “also be at the level of the other Latin American countries.”

Lugo also celebrated the 30th anniversary of the promulgation of the Paraguayan Constitution of 1992.

On the other hand, he said he was seeing “the same people” who in 2018 gave him the electoral victory that led him to the Presidency.

Lugo’s victory displaced the hegemony of the Colorado Party, which had governed since the fall of the dictatorship of Alfredo Stroessner (1954-1989). However, he was removed from office in June 2012 in a parliamentary trial.

Last Friday, eight pre-candidates for the Presidency of Paraguay attended a first meeting of the agreement, held at the request of Lugo.

The Paraguayans will decide on December 18 the candidates for the Presidency and the Vice Presidency, as well as for the different positions of popular election in internal ones to which all the political parties and movements have been summoned.

The general elections will take place in April 2023.
