MIAMI, United States. – This June 25, declared “Orange Day” by the United Nations campaign “Join” to end violence against women, Cuban filmmaker Marilyn Solaya lamented that there was no good news on the Island.
“A few minutes from the end of this Orange Day ―wrote on facebook the director―, that as every month we make a reminder about the violence that persists throughout the world against women and girls, we regret what happened to the young Claudia Montes, 22 years old, who had been reported missing in the Matanzas municipality of Martí since last June 11, and that unfortunately, was found lifeless”.
Solaya also referred to the femicide occurred on June 22, which ended the life of the young Patricia Williams, 30 years old; and she lamented that the murders of women in Cuba have risen to 12 so far this year.
“Other young women are unaccounted for,” he also lamented. In that case, he mentioned the 16-year-old Maydeleisis Rosales, who has been missing since May 30, 2021, in Havana; Already Yeniset Rojas Perezfrom Ranchuelo, Villa Clara, who has been unaccounted for since March 18.
He also alluded to the case of Addys López Rosales, 21, whose location has been unknown since May 2.
Solaya recalled that femicide is defined as the “intentional homicide of a woman at the hands of a man due to machismo or misogyny” and said that the concept defined “an act of maximum gravity, in a cultural and institutional context of discrimination and gender violence. which is usually accompanied by a set of actions of extreme violence and dehumanizing content, such as torture, mutilation, burns, cruelty and sexual violence, against women and girls”.
Finally, he pointed out that “Orange Day”, which is celebrated on the 25th of each month, sought to “mobilize public opinion and governments to undertake concrete actions in order to promote and foster a culture of non-violence.”
However, he did not mention the lack of transparency of the Cuban government, which does not regularly publish statistics on sexist violence and femicide.
Although the authorities have not ruled on the discovery of the body, the murder of Claudia Montes would be the second femicide registered in Cuba during the month of June and the thirteenth reported since the 1st. January 2022. There could be more cases, but the independent organizations that regularly report episodes of sexist violence do not have access to official statistics.
