MIAMI, United States. – The non-governmental organization Human Rights Watch (HRW) demanded this Saturday the release of José Daniel Ferrer, the leader of the Patriotic Union of Cuba (UNPACU), and requested that his rights be respected.
“In Cuba, opposition leader José Daniel Ferrer has been in prison since July 11. His family has not been able to communicate with him for 20 days. His detention is arbitrary. We demand that he be released and that his rights be respected ”, tweeted Juan Pappier, senior researcher at HRW.
Recently, Nelva Ortega, wife of political prisoner José Daniel Ferrer, denounced that he had no news of Ferrer and held the Cuban regime responsible for the physical integrity of the UNPACU leader.
In a video broadcast by CubaNetOrtega demanded a life certificate from her husband and announced that she was going to the Mar Verde prison in Santiago de Cuba, where Ferrer is being held, to try to see him and talk to him.
“Transporters are threatened that if they go to the UNPACU headquarters they will take away their transportation,” he said. However, the doctor and activist managed to appear in Mar Verde, where she was not allowed to see her husband.
According to statements by Ana Belkis Ferrer, sister of the UNPACU leader, Ortega was only shown an out-of-focus video showing “a skinny man” that the activist could not identify.
The prison authorities told him that they are keeping him incommunicado because the opponent has stood up, does not want to wear a prison uniform and demands 20 minutes of telephone calls a day.
Last May, in statements to CubaNet the sister of the UNPACU leader denounced that she was being subjected to psychological torture in prison.
He also specified that Ferrer had not slept for days due to noises in the vicinity of his cell.
Ferrer was arrested on July 11, 2021 when he was preparing to join the popular demonstrations that shook the Island that day. He was transferred to a dungeon in the Versailles torture center, and in early August he was sent to the Mar Verde prison, where he has been isolated since then and without a trial date.
