Conservative Party bench confirmed that it will not oppose Gustavo Petro

By means of a public letter, the Conservative Party confirmed in the last hours that it will not oppose the president-elect of the Historical Pact, Gustavo Petro, and that, on the contrary, it will support the legislative agenda proposed by the political leader.

The letter, signed by 39 of its members from both the Senate and the House of Representatives, reveals once again the rupture within the Conservative Party, Well, one day before the document was made known, former President Andrés Pastrana launched harsh criticism at those who announced their support for Petro.

Pastrana also invited party members to pay attention to the president-elect’s proposals, every time they “threaten the democratic system”.

Despite this warning, A large part of the Conservatives took a step to the side so as not to declare themselves in opposition.

“Considering the responsibility that we historically have today as Democratic political leaders, with a center-right approach and attached to the conservative principles that guide our actions […] we inform Colombians that we will not be an opposition party and we declare our support for the legislative agenda proposed by the incoming government”, cites the letter.

In this way, the president-elect reaffirms that he will have the majorities in Congress during his government.

The Conservatives further explained that the decision was adopted taking into account the principles of the 1991 Constitutionbut they took advantage of the signed statement to send a message to Petro.

We declare our support […] having as a premise the respect for private property and all individual liberties”adds the statement.

After learning of the document, President-elect Gustavo Petro himself celebrated the position of the bench, and welcomed the Conservative Party to the ‘Grand National Agreement’.

“History will be built if the Conservative Party supports the legislative initiatives of the Government of change. The soul of Álvaro Gómez Hurtado, of the 1991 Constitution, revives in the agreement on what is fundamental,” Petro said through his Twitter account.
