The Governor of the Metropolitan Region, Claudio Orrego, addressed the security situation in Santiago after acts of violence such as the murder of a young man in Parque Forestal or the gunshot attack suffered by a man outside a nightclub. In this regard, he stated that the matter corresponds to the Government.
The governor was asked if the economic reactivation plan for “ground zero” in downtown Santiago -which includes $500 million pesos- that he presented this Saturday, considers the field of security. He replied that this “is up to the Government.”
“We do not have direct powers in security and it is important that the government collaborate in this joint effort,” said the regional authority.
Even so, he pointed out that “in all security matters, although we do not have powers, we do have actions,” adding that “we are investing more than 73 billion pesos in good lighting, remote surveillance cameras, PDI headquarters, vehicles for Carabineros, but we are not responsible for security.”
Hassler emphasizes disarmament project
The mayor of Santiago, Iraqi Hassleralso addressed the security situation in the capital and emphasized the disarmament project that the Executive seeks to promote.
“As the Municipality of Santiago we will always continue to be available to contribute to the co-production of security and we call on the State as a whole to assume as a priority the power to have safe spaces for all people,” he commented. .
“It cannot be the situation that we have in our country regarding firepower, and that is why we consider it essential that what the Government has indicated regarding moving forward so that weapons are a limited element, an element that does not be normalized in our country seems key to us and we hope to be able to advance in concrete results in that”, he added.
