In Cuba, during the current year, there are an average of 27 traffic accidents per day, in which two people die and another 30 are injured, according to a report from the National Traffic Directorate referred by official means.
The data collected from January to May show 4,062 accidents that occurred in these first five months of the year, according to what was indicated by Colonel Mario Ríos Labrada, head of the Department of Vehicle Registration of the National Traffic Directorate.
The report indicates that the number of claims of this type in said period exceeds the figures of a similar interval in the two preceding years, although it should be noted that the figures are lower compared to what was registered in 2017, 2018 and 2019.
Last 2021, there were 8,319 traffic accidents with 589 fatalities and 5,859 injuries, in a year in which the number of vehicles on the road increased, through the growth in the number of mopeds and combustion and electric motorcycles. For this 2022 an increase of around 350,000 vehicles in circulation was expected.
Similarly, it highlights that in 2021 more than half a million traffic fines were imposed and more than 3,000 breathalyser controls were carried out on the road, as part of the measures to avoid unfortunate accidents.
On average, so far this year, one person has died for every 14 accidents that have occurred, and among the most frequent causes of these events are the violation of speed limits, technical malfunctions in vehicles, not respecting the rights of way , as well as the lack of attention and control when driving or doing so under the influence of alcohol, details the report.
