The mayor of Montevideo, Carolina Cosse, together with other authorities, visited the Che settlement on Friday the 24th, where she informed its inhabitants that the commune reached an agreement with the Ministry of Housing and Territorial Planning (MVOT) to relocate them.
The Che settlement is located on Cuba street and José Batlle y Ordóñez avenue, in the surroundings of the Fortaleza del Cerro. It is made up of 35 families, according to a census carried out by the neighborhood commission of the area.
The houses are located on rocky and inclined terrain, which does not allow the construction of foundations and cesspools. They have had the OSE service for a year.
The neighborhood commission contacted the Land and Habitat Division of the Urban Development Department of the commune, realizing the precarious situation in which the families live. Within this framework, the Administration has a piece of land from its Land Portfolio for the relocation of these families. Currently working on the architectural project of the houses.
Given that the characteristics of the land make it uninhabitable, the Administration asked the MVOT to prioritize it for relocation. As a result, the National Directorate for Social and Urban Integration incorporated this settlement into the Avanzar plan for the eradication of settlements, announced in May of this year.
