President Gabriel Boric insists on recognizing the progress of the last 30 years, ruling out “contradiction” with previous statements

The president of the Republic, Gabriel Boricaddressed his statements issued on Wednesday at the inauguration of the academic year of the Institute of Chile, where he valued what was done by previous leaders during the last 30 years after the civic-military dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet.

“I want today as a representative of this generation millennial or whatever you want to call it, to say that in the famous 30 years there was a lot of movement and that Chile does not start in 2019 nor does it start in 2011. Chile is a country in which since the recovery of democracy, in the last 30 years there have been tremendous advances, tremendous advances,” the President specified on that occasion.

When asked about what was expressed about the previous former presidents on Wednesday and his old criticism of them when he was a deputy, at which time he said that former president Lagos was “the worst face” of the then New Majority, Boric specified that “when I do not I have valued the increase, for example, in education coverage or the decrease in poverty. Is there a time when I have contradicted myself (sic) regarding that?

“There is no contradiction here. What we have defended, on the one hand we have a vision where history does not part with us, and therefore I am building as President of the Republic on what my predecessors did,” added the Leader.

In turn, he maintained that “there were good and bad things, things that could have been done better, things that were left halfway, there were great successes, but Chile is a continuity. As President of the Republic, I have the duty to learn from that history”.

Boric-Lagos meeting

Referring to the meeting he held with the former president Ricardo Lagosthe head of state expressed that “when I talk with President Lagos, as I have done with President Frei, with President Bachelet, at the time with President Piñera, I would have loved to do it more with President Aylwin, it is precisely because I am aware that living in the Republic implies collecting what those who preceded us did”.

Along the same lines, he pointed out that “there is no change in the assessment. I am fully aware that the history of Chile does not start with my election as president and that is what I have constantly talked about with President Lagos, that is why I went talk to him this week at his foundation.

“We were discussing issues of Chile’s insertion in international politics, concerns about the difficult scenario we have in the world, and also about the internal scenario,” added Boric.

Finally, he stated that he was “very grateful to the former presidents, for the generosity they have shown to be able to share their experiences and be able to improve the course.”
