In a letter dated April 2022, addressed to the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detentions, the lawyer assures that by the time they received the letter he had already managed to free himself from the siege of the Dgcim while he was confined in the Military Hospital
Lawyer Carlos Eduardo Garrido Bustamante, who had been arbitrarily detained on July 28, 2021 by officials of the Military Counterintelligence Division (Dgcim), for allegedly falsifying documents and for the crime of criminal association, he escaped from the custody of this security body while he remained in the facilities of the Carlos Arvelo Military Hospital, according to unofficial information published by the journalist Nelson Bocaranda and the lawyer Tamara Suju, both on their Twitter accounts.
The precise date of Garrido’s escape is still unknown, but both Bocaranda and Suju publish a letter dated April 23, 2022, signed and with fingerprints presumed to be Garrido’s, which is addressed to the United Nations (UN) Working Group on Arbitrary Detentions in which the lawyer affirms that he was able to free himself from the military siege and that “by the date you receive this communication,” says the document, he assures that he would have already managed to escape.

By the time the letter is dated, Garrido had been arbitrarily detained for eight months, sincen August 25, 2021, the 31st Court of First Instance of the Metropolitan Area of Caracas, had issued the release ticket that was ignored by the director of the Dgcim, in addition to two more court orders indicating their release.

Relatives of the lawyer denounce that during the early hours of this Friday, June 24, Dgcim officials raided the homes of people close to Garrido’s entourage and took his cousin Jorge Pérez Bustamante, along with his wife and two minor children, without an arrest warrant.in addition to taking computers and cell phones.
So far, the family still has no information about the whereabouts of Pérez Bustamante, who is an ophthalmologist and the whereabouts of his wife and children, who are Spanish citizens, are also unknown.
