The American Serena Williams, winner of seven Wimbledons, great attraction of the British tournament after returning to compete a year later, will debut against the French Harmony Tan, 113 in the classification.
The American, who has 23 Grand Slams – one more than Rafael Nadal has in the men’s competition – has not played in singles since the first round of Wimbledon last year, when she injured her foot. This week she has played two doubles matches in Eastbourne, together with Ons Jabeur, but her partner withdrew after the second victory, due to physical discomfort of the Tunisian.
Along the way, the American can have the Spanish Sara Sorribes in the second round.
Anett Kontaveit, the second seed, will play her first match against American Bernarda Pera.
Mexican Fernanda Contreras Gómez, the first Mexican in 26 years at Wimbledon, will debut against Magda Linette and Colombian Camila Osorio, who has already won matches here in 2021, will start against Elise Mertens. EFE
